VOLUNTEERING

The Backbone of Grassroots Football

Volunteers are the reason grassroots football exists. Every matchday, training session, tournament, and league operation relies on people giving their time for free so children can play the game safely, fairly, and consistently.

From coaches and team managers to referees, secretaries, and matchday helpers. Without volunteers, football does not happen. It is that simple.

Volunteering is not just about helping the league. It:

  • Builds confidence and leadership

  • Develops teamwork and communication

  • Strengthens clubs and communities

  • Sets positive examples for young players

Every club in the Newport Junior Football League depends on volunteers to function properly.

Why Volunteers Matter

Volunteers are responsible for:

  • Coaching and player development

  • Matchday organisation and safety

  • Administration and communication

  • Safeguarding and welfare

  • Fundraising and events

  • Facility setup and shutdown

When clubs struggle to find volunteers, the impact is immediate:

  • Teams fold

  • Fixtures get cancelled

  • Admin suffers

  • Children lose opportunities to play

Strong volunteer support means strong, stable clubs.

How Clubs Can Recruit Volunteers

Recruitment does not need to be complicated. The best volunteers often come from within your own club community.

1. Ask Directly

Do not rely on “someone might step forward”. Ask parents, carers, and supporters directly:

  • At training

  • On matchdays

  • In WhatsApp groups

  • At parent meetings

Most people are willing to help when they are asked clearly.

2. Be Clear About the Role

People are more likely to volunteer when they know:

  • What the role involves

  • How much time it takes

  • What support they will get

Avoid vague requests like “we need help”. Be specific.

3. Start Small

Not everyone can commit to a full role straight away. Offer smaller tasks:

  • Matchday setup

  • Team admin support

  • Fundraising help

  • Refreshments

  • Social media support

Small roles often lead to bigger involvement.

4. Promote the Benefits

Volunteering is not just giving time. Highlight the positives:

  • Being part of the club

  • Supporting your child’s team

  • Learning new skills

  • Gaining recognised qualifications

  • Giving back to the community

5. Support and Retain Your Volunteers

Recruitment is pointless without retention. Clubs should:

  • Offer proper support

  • Provide training where required

  • Share workloads

  • Recognise effort

  • Say thank you

Burned-out volunteers leave. Supported volunteers stay.

Want to Volunteer?

If you are interested in helping at your local club, speak to:

  • Your Team Manager

  • Your Club Secretary

  • Or your child’s coach

Every role, no matter how small, makes a difference.
